First Steps to Understanding your Buildings Performance: Internalizing the Practices of Sustainability

Operating a building has become an increasingly complex endeavor. With the growing awareness of sustainable practices, building occupants have higher expectations of workplace environments. At the same time, the rising costs of resources place extreme pressure on building owners, facility managers, and building engineers to operate buildings at top performance levels while keeping their operating costs low. The key to a building owner's success lies in surmounting these challenges through a step-by step process:

  • 1. Understand the baseline of your buildings performance through energy and sustainability audits
  • 2. Focus on your low cost/no cost improvements identifying your capital improvements and implementing those improvements whether they are a mechanical upgrade or a waste stream audit.
  • 3. Determine your progress.

This class will take you through all these steps and help to identifying tools such as the requirements of LEED for Existing Buildings Operations and Maintenance (LEED-EB O+M) can help building owners address these diverse needs. When combined with smart informational management systems, this process makes it even easier to internalize your efforts into your culture and set a new precedent for effective building operations and maintenance.

This presentation will offer participants insights from case studies of members of the Green Sports Alliance along with other venue facilities and projects that have benefited from adopting these practices. The session will be presented by Elaine Aye, IIDA, LEED- AP EB:O&M, and Ted Spear, PE, LEED-AP. These seasoned professionals bring expertise in successfully assisting owner, facility and alliances property managers to fully understand their buildings performance and discover ways to integrate improvements. The presenters also have extensive experience in offering training sessions for these processes.

This presentation has been ERB approved by the USGBC to fulfill 8 hours of your LEED® Credential Maintenance Program requirements. A certificate of completion will be provided to attendees.
